Police claim to have received information about the involvement of an organised cross-border smuggling syndicate in the murder of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

In connection with this incident, the Detective Branch (DB) Police has applied to court to take the two arrested accused on a further seven-day remand.

On Sunday, DB Police’s Motijheel Zonal Team Inspector (Unarmed) Faisal Ahmed submitted an application in this regard at the court of Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shefatullah. Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsud Doha Shumon represented the state at the hearing.

The remand application stated that preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested accused, Sibyan Diu (32) and Sanjay Chism (23) in the anti-terrorism and murder case of Paltan Model Police Station, helped the main accused Faisal Karim Masud and his associates cross the border illegally after the murder.

The remand application mentioned that after the murder, the main accused Faisal Karim Masud and his associates fled to a neighbouring country through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh district. Information from electronic and print media, technical analysis, and interrogating the two arrested accused have provided leads on this matter.

DB’s application stated that information has been found regarding the involvement of an individual named “Phillip” as the mastermind of the cross-border smuggling syndicate. To identify his location, arrest him, and identify the financiers and planners of the murder, extensive re-interrogation of the accused is necessary.

Furthermore, police informed the court that further remand is essential to uncover who made contact and who provided assistance for conducting the “killing mission” before the murder.

Police stated that on 12 December, on a road heading towards the Bijoynagar water tank area in the Box Culvert Road area under Paltan Police Station, Sharif Osman Hadi was shot at close range while in a moving auto-rickshaw.

In critical condition, he was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later to Evercare Hospital. When his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Singapore General Hospital via air ambulance. He died there on the night of 18 December while undergoing treatment.

He was buried in Dhaka University next to Kazi Nazrul Islam on Saturday.

In this incident, Section 302 has been added along with Sections 120, 326, 307, 109, and 34 of the Penal Code to the case filed at Paltan Model Police Station. The case is currently being investigated by the DB Police’s Motijheel Zonal Team.
