A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the seizure of several properties owned by Sobita Agarwala, wife of Dilip Kumar Agarwala, managing director of Diamond World and a member of the central industry and commerce subcommittee of Awami League.
Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court given the order following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The seized assets include a commercial space in Dhaka, land in Chuadanga, and shops along with the associated land of an under-construction market in Rajshahi.
In its petition, the ACC said Sobita Agarwala, 51, allegedly acquired and possessed movable and immovable assets worth Tk 45.70 crore that are inconsistent with her known sources of income.
The commission also found evidence of suspicious transactions amounting to Tk 213.28 crore in eight bank accounts held in her name and in the names of related entities.
Based on these allegations, the ACC filed a case against her and appointed an investigation officer.
During the investigation, a review of records and documents indicated attempts to transfer or dispose of the properties registered in her name.
The ACC told the court that if the assets were transferred before the case reached disposal, the state could suffer irreparable losses. It therefore sought an order to seize the properties at this stage.
After hearing the arguments, the court accepted the ACC’s plea and ordered the seizure of the relevant land and shops.
