A Dhaka court on Tuesday rejected a petition filed by Moazzem Hossain, the ex-assistant private secretary (APS) to former Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, seeking permission to travel to Thailand for medical treatment.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez passed the order following a hearing.
During the proceedings, Moazzem’s counsel, Advocate Md Raihan, argued that his client had been implicated in a conspiratorial case and was not involved in any anti-state or law-breaking activities.
The court was informed that Moazzem had suffered a spinal cord injury resulting in fluid leakage and had an appointment scheduled in Thailand for 15 February. However, after hearing the arguments, the judge turned down the application, as confirmed by Bench Assistant Riaz Hossain.
Moazzem Hossain, a university friend of Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, was appointed as his assistant after Asif joined the interim government as a student representative following the July mass uprising and the subsequent fall of the Awami League government.
However, allegations later surfaced against Moazzem regarding the abuse of power, lobbying, and tender manipulation, through which he reportedly accumulated assets worth hundreds of crores of taka. Amidst these allegations, he was relieved of his duties on 21 April.
Following his removal, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) interrogated Moazzem on 22 May. Two days after the interrogation, the court imposed a travel ban on him and ordered the blocking of his National Identity (NID) card.
