A Dhaka court has denied bail to former senior secretary Abu Alam Mohammad Shahid Khan and three others in a case filed with Shahbagh Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
During a hearing in the case on Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam rejected their bail petitions filed by their lawyers.
Three other accused are Md Amir Hossain Suman, Md Al Amin, and Shafiqul Islam Delwar.
During the hearing, Kamrul Hossain, a lawyer for Shahid Khan, along with the lawyers for the other accused, filed separate for their bail.
However, Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddin Suman opposed the bail plea. The court subsequently rejected the bail petitions and ordered the detention of the accused in jail.
Shahid Khan was arrested by detective police in the capital on 7 September and put on police remand.
According to prosecution, a deep conspiracy to erase the history of the Liberation War and distort its narrative led to the formation of an organisation named “Manch 71” on 5 August.
The group’s goal is to resist any conspiracies aimed at erasing the nation’s achievements and prepare the people of Bangladesh for self-sacrifice.
As part of this effort, a roundtable meeting was organised at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha in the capital on 28 August.
During the event, a group of individuals entered the venue, causing chaos and shouting slogans. They closed the doors of the hall and harassed several participants.
The protesters also tore the event’s banner and confined the attendees.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Amirul Islam filed the case on 29 August with Shahbagh Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
