A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Petrobangla director Rafiqul Islam amid an ongoing corruption investigation that alleges he amassed illegal wealth worth Tk100crore.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz passed the order, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
In its application, the ACC said it is probing several allegations against Rafiqul, including corruption, illegal gas connections and reconnections, gas bill waivers, irregularities in recruitment and promotions, approval of contractor bills without proper procedures, and selling information on the country’s gas reserves to foreign entities.
The commission also said it received credible information indicating that Rafiqul might flee the country during the investigation.
Concerned that his departure could obstruct or delay the inquiry, the ACC sought a travel ban.
After hearing the petition, the court granted the request and issued an order preventing Rafiqul from leaving the country.
