Preparations are underway for the 98th Academy Awards, set for March 16, with Conan O’Brien returning as host and organisers promising a heartfelt In Memoriam segment.
Lynette Howell Taylor, newly appointed president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, emphasised the unique nature of each Oscars show. “Every year is different,” she said. “Every season, every set of movies is different, so the show always evolves.”
Academy CEO Bill Kramer highlighted the balance required between celebrating nominees in the room and entertaining audiences at home. “We’re constantly looking at that puzzle and this year is going to be spectacular,” he said.
Top nominees this year include ‘Sinners’ and ‘One Battle After Another’, both praised for their bold storytelling and emotional depth. The ceremony will also feature the new award for casting, along with performances and tributes.
Ratings have been improving since the 2021 pandemic lows, particularly among viewers aged 18 to 49, aided by streaming on Hulu and partnerships with online personalities. “Young people are watching in ways we have not seen before,” Kramer said.
Production design has been meticulously planned, with a warm, intimate new look for the stage and red carpet. Last year’s surprise performances demonstrated the team’s flexibility to adapt to the moment.
This year, the In Memoriam segment will honour icons including Robert Redford, Diane Keaton, Rob Reiner, Catherine O’Hara and Val Kilmer. Organisers promise it will be “robust, beautiful and very moving,” with a longer version available online.
The ceremony is aiming to keep the broadcast under three and a half hours despite the new category, while continuing to provide dynamic and emotionally resonant content.
The Academy plans to stream the 100th Oscars on YouTube in 2029, expanding its global reach and year-round cinematic programming.
