Bangladesh’s Under-20 women’s football team have been eliminated from the AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup in Thailand after a 0-1 defeat to Vietnam on Tuesday, 7 April.
Going into their final group-stage match, Bangladesh needed only a draw to secure third place in Group A, a result that would have kept their quarter-final hopes alive, subject to other results. Instead, a costly goalkeeping error proved decisive.
Goalkeeper Mili Akhtar, who had performed reliably throughout the tournament, came off her line to collect a free kick just outside the box in the early stages of the second half but failed to hold the ball. The loose effort was headed into the net by a Vietnamese forward, giving the opposition a lead they would not relinquish.
Bangladesh had roughly 40 minutes to find an equaliser but struggled to create meaningful chances. Their best opportunity had come in the first half, when Sagarika, who had scored twice against Thailand, found herself one-on-one with the Vietnamese goalkeeper yet failed to convert. Vietnam retained comfortable possession without adding to their tally, and the match ended 0-1.
It marks a difficult exit for Bangladesh, who were competing in the AFC U-20 Women’s tournament for the very first time. Their campaign opened with promise, Sagarika’s brace gave them the lead against Thailand until the 69th minute, before two defensive errors led to a pair of penalties, and Bangladesh ultimately lost. A goalless first half against a strong China side was followed by two second-half concessions.
