Police have arrested content creator Abdullah Al Mamun in a case filed over alleged extortion from suspended Nawapara Union Parishad Chairman Md Alamgir Hossain in Satkhira.
Mamun was arrested from Chandipur village in Debhata Upazila late on Tuesday night.
The case was filed over allegations of extortion by spreading a video showing intimate moments involving the former wife of the suspended UP chairman.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused threatened to publish intimate videos and photos involving Alamgir’s former wife, Jannatul Ferdous (Mousumi), unless he paid Tk1 lakh.
The demand was later settled at Tk50,000, but the accused allegedly continued to blackmail him.
The FIR states that Alamgir divorced Mousumi six to seven months ago over family disputes. The accused allegedly obtained intimate videos and photos from their married life and sent them to Alamgir’s WhatsApp on 15 October.
On 29 October, the videos and photos were leaked from a Facebook account titled ‘Sakhipur Union Chhatra Dal’.
They were later shared from Mamun’s personal Facebook account on Sunday.
Sakhipur Union Chhatra Dal President Jisan Babul has been named the prime accused, Mamun the second accused and Mousumi the third. Two to three unidentified people have also been accused.
Alamgir said the incident was intended to humiliate and defame him socially.
He filed the case with digital evidence at the police station.
Inspector (Investigation) Jamil Kabir of Satkhira Sadar Police Station confirmed Mamun’s arrest, saying police drives are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
