The primary party membership of Mia Md Mostafizur Rahman Mostak, former member secretary of Taltali Upazila BNP in Barguna, has been suspended over allegations of violating party discipline and making offensive remarks about district leaders.
The suspension was announced in a letter dated 29 October, signed by Barguna District BNP Convenor Md Nazrul Islam Molla and Member Secretary SM Humayun Hasan Shaheen.
The letter circulated on social media on Monday, sparking anger among some party leaders, grassroots activists and Mostak’s supporters.
According to party sources, the dispute began on 15 August at a meeting marking the 82nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Mostak allegedly made derogatory remarks about Nazrul Islam Molla, accusing him of supporting the Awami League.
After a video of his speech spread on social media, two rival groups emerged within Taltali Upazila BNP. One group supported Mostak, while the other, led by former Upazila BNP Convenor Shahidul Haque and Senior Joint Convenor Md Mahbubul Alam Mamun, backed Nazrul Islam Molla.
Barguna District BNP later issued Mostak a show-cause notice and formed an investigation committee. Following the inquiry, the district leadership suspended his primary party membership on 29 October.
Rejecting the allegations, Mostak accused Nazrul Islam Molla and SM Humayun Hasan Shaheen of extortion, terrorist activities and helping Awami League members regain a foothold in Taltali.
He said he had protested against these activities and replied to the show-cause notice, but his party membership was suspended anyway. He also said he had not officially received the suspension letter and had only seen it on social media.
However, Shaheen said Mostak had not replied to the show-cause notice. He added that an investigation committee was formed and the allegations were found to be true before the suspension was issued.
