A Dhaka court has granted bail to content creator Hasan Nasim in a case filed over allegations of spreading misleading information and attempting to blackmail the Chief Whip of the National Parliament on social media.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order on Tuesday after concluding a hearing, according to court sources.
Advocate Zahirul Islam argued on behalf of the accused. “We applied for bail today before the honourable court. The court was satisfied and granted him bail,” the lawyer said.
Hasan Nasim was arrested last Friday night from a rented residence in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area. He had been in jail since his arrest.
According to the case complaint, on 11 April, Hasan Nasim made a sarcastic Facebook post about Chief Whip and Barguna-2 lawmaker Nurul Islam Moni.
The post featured a caption: “I have brought 3 whales from the sea, 2 sharks are coming, Insha’Allah, everyone is invited: Chief Whip.”
In addition to the post, allegations were raised that he had disseminated misleading information on various occasions. Furthermore, an attempt was made to blackmail the Chief Whip by sending screenshots from an unknown WhatsApp number to his personal number, the complaint states.
Md Nazrul Islam, a follower of the Chief Whip, filed the case under the Cyber Security Act at Gulshan Police Station in connection with the incident.
