Sri Lanka may get the chance to play a T20 World Cup semi final at home in 2026 if they reach that stage. The venue will depend on their opponent and on whether Pakistan qualify.
The ICC has told teams and officials that the first semi final will be a floating match. It can be played either in Colombo or in Kolkata.
If Pakistan reach the semi finals, they will play semi final one in Colombo on 4 March. If Pakistan do not qualify but Sri Lanka do, and Sri Lanka face any team other than India, that match will also be held in Colombo at the R Premadasa Stadium.
If neither Pakistan nor Sri Lanka reach the semi finals, semi final one will be played in Kolkata and semi final two in Mumbai. The ICC also said that if India make the semi finals, they will play in Mumbai no matter who they face. The only exception is if India meet Pakistan. In that case, the match will be moved to Colombo.
If India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka all fail to qualify, then the Group 1 winner from the Super Eight will face the Group 2 runners up in Kolkata. The Group 2 winner will meet the Group 1 runners up in Mumbai.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan are both in Group 2 of the Super Eight. This means they cannot face each other in the semi final.
The update clears up the plan first shared in November. That earlier schedule said Pakistan could play their semi final and even the final in Sri Lanka, but it did not explain what would happen if Sri Lanka also reached the knockouts. The ICC has now confirmed how the venues will be decided in each case.
