In a joint operation, Bangladesh Coast Guard and Department of Fisheries seized a large quantity of marine fish and jatka (juvenile hilsa) in Patuakhali to enforce the government’s 58-day ban on sea fishing.
According to a press release issued by Patuakhali Coast Guard on Friday, government has prohibited all types of fishing in Bangladesh’s marine waters from 15 April 2026 to 11 June 2026.
As part of efforts to implement this ban, a joint team from Patuakhali Coast Guard Station and Department of Fisheries conducted a drive at 11:00pm on Thursday, in the area adjacent to toll plaza under Patuakhali Sadar Police Station.
During the operation, officials searched for a suspicious passenger bus and recovered approximately 4,000 kg of various marine fish and 1,800 kg of jatka.
The estimated market value of the seized fish is Tk3.86 million. The bus driver and his helpers were released after providing a formal undertaking.
The confiscated fish were subsequently distributed among local orphanages, madrasas, and the underprivileged in the presence of Patuakhali Upazila Fisheries representative.
The Coast Guard stated that such operations would continue in the future to protect marine biodiversity and ensure the livelihoods of local communities.
