Coast Guard arrested the chief of a bandit gang Mejo Jahangir in the Sundarbans along with arms and ammunition.
Media Officer of Coast Guard Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan confirmed the matter on Tuesday.
Lt Commander Sujan said, “Coast Guard maintains a strict stance against all forest bandits active in the Sundarbans region. As part of this, two special operations, named ‘Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans’ and ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’, are being conducted under the leadership of the Coast Guard.”
As part of the ongoing missions, Md Zahidul Islam, alias Mejo Jahangir, was arrested during the fourth phase of “Operation Mangrove Shield”.
Following a secret tip-off that the bandit was near the Adachai Forest Office, a special team from Coast Guard Base Mongla launched a raid at 1am. He was arrested with two single-barrel guns and five rounds of live cartridges.
Zahidul has reportedly led this gang for a long period, conducting robberies in the Sundarbans and collecting ransom by taking fishermen hostage.
Legal proceedings regarding the seized weapons, ammunition, and the suspect are underway.
