Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and the Bangladesh Tea Association (BTA) have held discussions on establishing solar power plants within the tea estates of Sylhet and Chattogram, according to a press release.
The plan focuses on utilising approximately 284 acres of unused land inside the gardens for solar installations.
The meeting, chaired by BTA Chairman Kamran T Rahman, took place on 20 November at the association’s office in Mohakhali, Dhaka. Key participants included IDCOL Executive Director and CEO Alamgir Morshed, Head of Renewable Energy Md Enamul Karim Pavel, and Head of the Technical Unit for Renewable Energy Mohammad Wahidur Rahman. Representatives from the tea association also attended.
During the talks, the tea association requested that IDCOL conduct site visits to assess the feasibility of the proposed solar plants. Morshed stated that IDCOL will work closely with the tea estates to tap into their solar power potential.
The organisation remains committed to accelerating Bangladesh’s transition to clean energy through financing renewable energy, energy efficiency, and infrastructure projects, he added.
IDCOL has financed 192 megawatts of rooftop solar installations across Bangladesh and has a track record of financing 271 megawatts across six solar power plants.
As a national entity for channelling domestic and international climate finance, IDCOL supports organisations including the World Bank, KfW, USAID, JICA, and the Green Climate Fund. It plays a role in improving energy efficiency, particularly in energy-intensive sectors like textiles and garments. These initiatives contribute to Bangladesh’s nationally determined contribution and renewable energy targets.
