A Dhaka court on Friday sent Moin Uddin, the prime accused in an extortion case involving the Center for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital in Shyamoli, and six of his associates to jail following the completion of their remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after rejecting their bail petitions. The other accused sent to jail are Faruk Hossain Suman, Md. Liton Mia, Md. Falan Mia, Md. Rubel, Swapon Kazi, and Md. Shaon Hossain.
The case was initiated on April 11 by Md Abu Hanif, the operation theatre (OT) in-charge of CKD Hospital, who filed a complaint with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Moin Uddin was named as the principal accused, along with seven to eight unidentified individuals. Following the filing of the case, the seven accused were arrested and taken into remand.
On Friday, SI Md Sabbir Ahmed, the investigating officer from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, produced the accused in court and requested they be detained in custody.
SI Rafiqul Islam of the Prosecution Department noted that while defence lawyers moved for bail, the state opposed the plea, leading the court to order their imprisonment.
According to the case statement, Moin and his associates had been demanding Tk 5 lakh from the hospital for a long time. When Hanif expressed his inability to pay the extortion money, the accused subjected him to various threats.
The situation escalated on the morning of April 10, when the group went to Hanif’s residence on Road 3 in Shyamoli. Moin allegedly demanded the money from Hanif’s wife, threatening her with severe consequences if the payment was not made immediately.
When she refused, the group began behaving rowdily. Hanif then contacted his younger brother, Md Monir Talukdar, 35, who was at the hospital, asking him to come to the house.
Upon Monir’s arrival, the accused began misrepresenting the facts of the incident to gather a crowd.
Eventually, around 50 to 60 people were mobilised in front of CKD Hospital, where they created a chaotic environment by shouting abusive slogans and attempting to destabilise the atmosphere.
The protesters reportedly targeted the hospital’s owner, Dr. Kamrul Islam, with threatening slogans and attempted to create unrest in front of the emergency department, disrupting the hospital’s normal functions.
The situation was eventually brought under control by police from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
