City Bank has secured the top position in Bangladesh Bank’s Sustainable Banking Rating 2024, marking its fifth consecutive year among the country’s top 10 sustainable banks. This is the first time Bangladesh Bank has officially announced the rankings, placing City Bank at the top.

On 21 August 2025, Dr Ahsan H Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, presented a crest and certificate to City Bank Managing Director and CEO Masrur Arefin at an event held at the central bank’s headquarters. Deputy Governor Nurunnahar and other senior officials of Bangladesh Bank also attended the ceremony.

The Sustainable Banking Rating is based on two key areas: Financial Sustainability, which evaluates a bank’s performance across indicators like capital adequacy, liquidity, asset quality, profitability, cost control, customer service, and governance; and Environmental Sustainability, which assesses the bank’s efforts in sustainable financing, green initiatives, and social responsibility.

Masrur Arefin, MD and CEO of City Bank, expressed that financial sustainability is currently more crucial for the country than environmental sustainability. He noted that this rating, which considers both financial and environmental aspects, serves as an acknowledgment of City Bank as the ‘best bank’ by Bangladesh Bank. He shared that the entire bank’s leadership, management, customers, and stakeholders take pride in this achievement.

He also mentioned that the bank’s board has advised the management to transform City Bank into a financial institution that “operates like a fintech company, offering banking services to the entire population under a single license,” adding that the bank is on track to achieve this goal.
