Renowned choreographer Zakir Hossain, known for his work in many popular films, is currently battling cancer. He is a former leader of the Bangladesh Film Artists’ Association. He is moving between home and hospital as his weakened body endures chemotherapy every 14 days.
Despite ongoing treatment, his condition has not improved as hoped. Instead, it continues to deteriorate gradually.
The disease was diagnosed toward the end of February this year. Earlier, on February 2, he had sought medical attention, where doctors initially suspected a peptic ulcer and prescribed medication accordingly. However, when his condition failed to improve, further examinations, including an endoscopy and biopsy, revealed a tumor in his stomach, confirming the presence of cancerous cells.
Although doctors initially considered surgical removal of the tumor, it was later ruled out as he was deemed unfit for the procedure. The presence of fluid accumulation in his abdomen made surgery too risky. As a result, chemotherapy was chosen as the alternative course of treatment.
Zakir Hossain has been advised to undergo a total of 12 chemotherapy sessions, five of which he has completed so far. However, the treatment has yet to bring any noticeable improvement in his physical condition.
He is now preparing to seek advanced medical treatment abroad. Having been away from work for a long time, he is facing financial strain in managing his medical expenses. At present, his personal and family costs are being supported by his siblings. In this difficult time, the Bangladesh Film Artists’ Association, along with colleagues and close associates, has stepped forward to stand by him. He has also applied for government assistance.
Meanwhile, friends and colleagues have formed a fund to support his treatment, with many already contributing. An application has also been submitted to the Ministry of Information seeking financial aid.
