An 11-year-old child domestic help died after falling from a building in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Rikta Akter, daughter of Md Shahin Mia.
Police said the incident occurred around 6:30am at House 37 on Road 9/A in Dhanmondi.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Islam said the child had been working in a flat on the 10th floor of the building for about a month.
He added that she sustained serious injuries after falling from the veranda in the morning. She was rushed to Ibn Sina Specialised and Cardiac Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared her dead.
The body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, and an investigation is underway, the OC said.
The victim’s father, Md Shahin Mia, originally from Nizgaon village under Salna Police Station in Sunamganj, currently resides in Tongi, Gazipur with his wife Majeda, and three other children. Rikta was the second of his four children.
According to the victim’s father, he had sent his daughter to the Dhanmondi residence through a middleman for domestic work on a monthly payment of Tk 10,000.
He alleged that during a video call a week earlier, he noticed his daughter’s face was swollen and asked the broker to bring her back home.
However, the broker reportedly demanded repayment of the Tk 10,000.
Shahin Mia has rejected claims of an accidental death, alleging that his daughter was killed.
“My daughter did not die from a fall. She was killed,” he said, demanding justice and strict punishment for those responsible.
