Cultural organization Chhayanaut has called upon the government to reconsider its recent decision to cancel the recruitment of music and physical education teachers in primary education, warning that the move could have lasting consequences on children’s overall development.
In a statement issued on Friday, Chhayanaut said that music and physical education are essential not only for the physical well-being of students but also for their mental growth and emotional balance. The institution emphasized that these disciplines nurture creativity, empathy and discipline, qualities that help shape responsible citizens and an inclusive society.
“The physical and mental growth of children cannot be separated from cultural and creative engagement,” the statement noted. “To build an open, tolerant, and humane society, music education and physical exercise must be integral parts of early learning.”
As part of their appeal, artists, students, and well-wishers of Chhayanaut will hold a musical gathering on Saturday, November 8, 2025 (23 Kartik 1432), at 4:30 PM, in front of the Chhayanaut Sangskriti Bhaban in Dhanmondi. The event aims to peacefully draw attention to the need for reinstating these teaching positions in the national curriculum.
The institution also stressed that depriving young learners of access to music and physical education could weaken the foundation of a balanced educational system. “Education should not merely produce skilled workers; it should also cultivate humane and culturally aware individuals,” the statement added.
