Ahead of the planned ‘lockdown’ on 13 November, leaders of the banned Chhatra League reportedly locked the main gates of at least five buildings at Dhaka University in the early hours of Wednesday.
The buildings included the Faculty of Fine Arts, Institute of Education and Research, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Curzon Hall gate and the Science Building.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the incident to TIMES of Bangladesh and said action would be taken.
Mazharul Kabir Shayan, president of the banned Dhaka University wing of the Chhatra League, shared photos on Facebook, writing, “Make the lockdown successful all day on the 13th. Lockdown BSL – Faculty of Fine Arts, IER, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Curzon Hall Gate, Science Building, Dhaka University.”
The proctor said the locks placed on the gates had been broken and removed. He added that the estate office staff assigned to those gates during the incident will be terminated.
“We are trying to identify them by reviewing the CCTV footage,” he said.
He said additional security steps would be enforced on Wednesday in response to the Chhatra League programme.
“Along with our regular security measures, we will remain more alert and ensure maximum vigilance at all points,” he said.
Proctorial team sources said a meeting with assistant proctors, security officers and estate officials will be held at 2pm on Wednesday to review the situation and decide on further steps.
