The Big Bash League could stage its first-ever match in India next December, with Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium emerging as the leading venue for the opening game of the 2026-27 season.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Cricket Australia identified the home of the Chennai Super Kings as a possible host earlier this year. Discussions with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India have reportedly produced encouraging feedback.
A five-member Cricket Australia delegation attended Chennai Super Kings’ final IPL home match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday as part of a venue inspection programme. Officials are also working with the Australian government as talks continue.
The proposal still requires final approval at government level before organisers can confirm the fixture.
Cricket Australia may buy fixture rights from the host BBL club to move the match to India. That move could create financial and scheduling complications for franchises because one team would lose a home fixture in Australia.
Travel remains another concern. Teams would need to fly to Chennai through connecting routes such as Delhi or Bengaluru because no direct flights currently operate from Australia to the southern Indian city.
Broadcasters have also discussed kick-off times. Day games in India would fit Australian prime-time television slots more comfortably. Night matches in Chennai would start around midnight on Australia’s east coast.
Weather could create further uncertainty. Chennai often experiences heavy rain and flooding during December.
The plan follows similar overseas expansion attempts by Australian sporting competitions. The National Rugby League has already staged season-opening matches in Las Vegas. The BBL calendar, however, runs for only seven weeks, which leaves organisers with less room to adjust fixtures.
Several BBL clubs reportedly want involvement in the proposed opener, including Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades.
The Renegades already face venue questions after their deal with Marvel Stadium ended earlier this year. The club has explored alternatives including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Junction Oval and GMHBA Stadium.
The Chennai discussions remain separate from Cricket Australia’s ongoing talks around private investment in BBL franchises.
