The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has made significant strides in reducing dredging costs, saving at least Tk 50 crore, through modern planning and efficient execution, according to a press release signed by CPA Secretary Syed Refaet Hamim.
The release highlighted the introduction of a cost-effective dredging model aimed at maintaining navigability along the key channels from the mouth of the Karnaphuli River to the port’s main jetty, as well as up to Kalurghat. By employing coordinated planning among stakeholders and direct supervision by the Hydrography Department, CPA has managed to reduce dredging expenses significantly compared to previous years.
The project, overseen by the CPA Chairman and Member (Harbour and Marine), focused on ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process. Open tendering allowed for the selection of capable contractors at competitive rates, while dividing the work into smaller segments with fixed timelines improved both the efficiency and quality of the operations. The implementation of modern monitoring systems further helped curb unnecessary costs.
CPA’s approach also included the use of its own dredgers, which, combined with strategic planning, has proven to be a key factor in the savings. Regular field-level monitoring and strict administrative oversight ensured the accurate measurement of dredging volumes and quality, preventing any wastage of public funds.
The financial savings have not only benefited the port’s budget but have also had a direct positive impact on operations. The improved navigability of key channels has allowed larger commercial vessels to navigate the port more safely and efficiently, boosting the port’s cargo handling capacity.
A planned dredging operation in a 1.5-kilometre stretch upstream of the third Karnaphuli Bridge, from Sadarghat, has also led to more orderly vessel movement. This has allowed lighter ships and other watercraft to berth in a more disciplined manner, reducing the risk of maritime accidents.
Additionally, dredging operations at the mouths of eight major canals within the port area have ensured smoother drainage into the Karnaphuli River, which is expected to help alleviate waterlogging in Chittagong during the upcoming monsoon season.
The press release noted that had the Chittagong City Corporation undertaken these canal-front dredging works, it would have cost an additional Tk 85 crore. Thanks to CPA’s initiative, these funds have been saved, contributing to a more efficient and cost-effective solution.
The savings from dredging operations are now being redirected into vital infrastructure development and modernisation projects at the port. With a continued focus on transparency, accountability, and sustainable practices, CPA is on track to transform Chittagong Port into a world-class maritime hub.
