A N M Shahid Uddin Choton has taken charge as chairman of Boroghop Union Parishad in Kutubdia island in Cox’s Bazar. He is the president of Kutubdia Press Club and the younger brother of Chief Election Commissioner(CEC) A N M Nasir Uddin.
On Sunday, Shahid Uddin Choton received the charge from Boroghop Union Parishad administrator and Kutubdia Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Sadat Hossain. Kutubdia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kathwai Pru Marma was also present.
In the 2021 union parishad elections, Awami League’s boat symbol candidate Abul Kalam was initially declared chairman. Shahid Uddin Choton, the horse symbol candidate, filed a case at the election tribunal alleging vote rigging and fraud in two centers.
After nearly three and a half years, a re-count showed Choton receiving 189 more votes than the boat candidate. On 14 August, the Election Commission annulled the 2021 verdict and declared Choton as chairman.
On 1 September, Shahid Uddin Choton took the oath of office as chairman at the office of Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin.
