A case has been filed at the capital’s Ramna Police Station on Wednesday against unidentified individuals for leaking the income tax returns of National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan.
Golam Faruk, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramna Police Station, told TIMES of Bangladesh that the case was filed by Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Tax Zone 4 Ataur Ali Khan.
“No specific name has been mentioned in the case, though a link from a Facebook page has been referenced,” he said.
Expatriate investigative journalist Zulkarnain Sayer Khan Sami recently shared various details from the leaked income tax returns of the NBR Chairman for the 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23 fiscal years on his verified Facebook page, alleging that the Chairman did not provide accurate information in his tax returns.
Sami claimed that the Chairman showed the same figures for expenditures on food, clothing, and other essentials in all three tax years, amounting to Tk 180,000 annually.
He also pointed out that the Chairman reported spending Tk 4.2 million on his children’s education in the 2020-21 fiscal year, Tk 5.4 million in 2021-22, and Tk 2.6 million in 2022-23.
Sami stressed that in the 2020-21 fiscal year, Abdur Rahman Khan had sent Tk 4 million abroad while spending only Tk 15,000 per month on his family.
Despite owning ancestral land, Sami accused the Chairman of providing false information to obtain plot allotment from the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), the Dhaka development authority, as well as lending unusually large sums.
In the 2020-21 fiscal year, the chairman reportedly lent Tk 12 million, with significant beneficiaries being Tax Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman and AKM Hasanuzzaman, Sami claimed.
The leak of the Chairman’s income tax returns has created a stir among NBR officials.
