A case was filed on Monday over land-dispute clash in Kurigram that left three dead in Kurigram’s Nageshwari Upazila.
The clash erupted between two brothers, Nur Mohammad and Manik Munsi, and their two cousins, Altaf Hossain and Azizur Rahman.
Manik Munsi’s son-in-law, Sirajul Haque filed the case accusing 13 individuals with Nageshwari police station over the fatal clash that left three people dead in Kurigram’s, Nageshwari police station’s officer-in-charge Rezaul Karim Reza confirmed.
Three people, including a woman were killed and at least eight others were injured in the clash over ownership of 16 decimals of land.
The incident took place on Sunday in Hailatari village of Ward 8 under Santoshpur Union.
The deceased were identified as Altaf Hossain, 55, Manik Munsi’s son Ershadul Haque, 42, and Manik Munsi’s sister Kulsum Begum, 50.
Police have detained Altaf’s son, Mofazzal Hossain, 24, in connection with the incident.
According to the families of the victims, locals and police, the dispute began a year ago when Nur Mohammad, Manik Munsi, Altaf Hossain and Azizur Rahman jointly paid the landowner to purchase the 16-decimal plot.
However, none of them completed the registration, and the land was later taken into possession by Nur Mohammad and Manik Munsi, sparking a prolonged dispute. Several attempts to settle the matter locally had failed.
On Sunday, Altaf and Azizur allegedly went to take control of the land with their supporters. Both groups engaged in a fight with sticks and local weapons.
Ershadul Haque and Kulsum Begum died on the spot, while Altaf succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
At least eight others from both sides were seriously injured who were taken to Kurigram and Rangpur Medical College hospitals.
