A case has been filed over the attack on a vehicle carrying campaign materials for Atiq Mujahid, the NCP candidate backed by the 11-party alliance in Kurigram-2, late Tuesday night.
The assault left six party activists injured, including Mujahid’s younger brother, Ashiqur Rahman.
The case was lodged with the Kurigram Sadar Police Station, naming 35 individuals, including Chhatra Dal president Amimul Ihsan, as accused.
According to the NCP, the vehicle-displaying stickers and photographs of the candidate-was attacked while on the road.
The party has accused BNP activists and members of its student wing, Chhatra Dal, of staging the assault, alleging that the attack was led by Amimul Ihsan.
Mujahid claimed the assailants had intended to target him, but when he was not present at the scene, they turned their aggression toward his brother and the other party workers.
“They came to attack me. When they could not find me, they attacked my brother and the others,” he said.
In response to the incident, Mujahid led a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s residence, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.
He further claimed that the opposition, fearing defeat in the election, is attempting to suppress public support through intimidation.
“They have already realised they will lose the election. Now they are trying to stop the public movement through fear. But the people of Kurigram do not fear,” he said.
Ashiqur Rahman has been taken to Rangpur for advanced treatment, while the other injured activists received initial medical care in Kurigram. Authorities are investigating the incident and have yet to comment on the allegations.
