A case has been filed against 300-350 people in connection with the vandalism, looting and arson attack at Chhayanaut Sanskriti Bhaban in Dhanmondi area of the capital.
Dulal Ghosh, manager of Chhayanaut, filed the case.
Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam confirmed the information to TIMES of Bangladesh on Sunday.
He said the case was lodged at Dhanmondi Police Station on Saturday night over vandalism, looting and an attempted arson attack at the cultural institution.
On Thursday night, following the spread of news about the death of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, a group attacked, vandalised and set fire to Chhayanaut, branding it an “institution of Indian hegemony.”
Before the attack on Chhayanaut, the buildings of two leading newspapers—Prothom Alo and The Daily Star—were set on fire, alongside incidents of vandalism and looting.
Photographs released after the attack show furniture, musical instruments, books and burnt photographs of artists scattered across the organisation’s premises, leaving students and those associated with Chhayanaut emotionally distressed.
On Friday, Interim Government Adviser for the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Mostofa Sarwar Farooki visited Chhayanaut and said after reviewing CCTV footage that those responsible would be brought under the law.
