The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the emergency procurement of diesel to address the country’s urgent fuel needs amid the escalating geopolitical crisis in the Middle East following the US-Israel war on Iran.

The meeting, the 29th of the 2025-26 fiscal year and the sixth of 2026, was held virtually via Zoom on Thursday. It was chaired by Minister for Finance and Planning Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, who also serves as the convener of the committee.

In-principle approval was granted for the direct purchase of 1.00 lakh metric tons of EN590-10 PPM grade diesel from AP Energy Investments Limited under the international procurement method, according to official sources.

The committee also gave the green light for the procurement of another 2.00 lakh metric tonnes of EN590 EURO 5 (10 PPM) grade diesel from Superstar International (Group) Limited through the same direct procurement method.

Officials said the emergency purchases were necessitated by supply uncertainties arising from the unstable geopolitical situation in the region, which has disrupted global energy markets and raised concerns over fuel availability.
