Bangladesh’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup starting XI announcement raised eyebrows as SAFF-winning goalkeeper Rupna Chakma was left out, with Mile Akter taking her place between the posts. Mile, who has mostly played in age-group sides, made a smooth debut without any notable errors, despite Bangladesh losing 2-0 to current champions China.
Goalkeeping coach Masud Ahmed Ujjal confirmed the change was a pre-planned strategy, coordinated with head coach Peter Butler two months prior.
In a video message from the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Ujjal said:
“The team completed a recovery session today, followed by a video review of mistakes from the last match. Tomorrow we will begin focused training to correct these errors. The players performed according to plan, and the coaching staff are pleased with their commitment and focus.”
He added, “We had a specific strategy for Mile, particularly to use her height advantage against China. This was discussed with the head coach months ago, and the work she has done in domestic leagues and training clearly paid off on the field.”
Looking ahead, Ujjal confirmed there were no major injuries in the squad, which is positive for upcoming fixtures. “Our goal for the next match against North Korea is to secure a good result—or at least a point. We will continue with video sessions and on-field training to prepare the team.”
Bangladesh will face North Korea in their second group match on 6 March, with kickoff scheduled for 8:00 PM Bangladesh time.
