Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintoo announced that the government has set a target to plant 50 million trees across the country within a single year and the programme is scheduled to commence in May.
He shared the information on Wednesday at the Secretariat, following a meeting of the tree plantation cell with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
In addition to the tree plantation meeting, Tarique conducted separate meetings to review the progress of several high-priority government initiatives, including the “Healthy Bangladesh” (Sushastho Bangladesh) programme and the introduction of “Farmer Cards”.
State Minister Shaikh Faridul Islam and secretaries from the relevant ministries attended the meeting during which officials reviewed the progress of the broader initiative to plant 250 million trees across the nation over the next five years.
Faridul said, “The government wants to see carbon trade as a commercial sector after garments. Mangrove forests will be created in coastal regions and monitored through GIS (Geographic Information System).”
