BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has stated that safeguarding the democratic environment created by the July Movement and building a safe state are now his primary responsibilities.
Speaking at an election rally for Dhaka-17 constituency in Banani on Monday, Tarique, who is contesting from the constituency as the Sheaf of Paddy candidate, expressed these views.
Tarique said, “BNP’s goal is to build a state where all citizens can move freely at any time of day or night, living peacefully with their families.” He added, “We will ensure that everyone—whether businesspeople, employees, or workers—can work in a safe environment.”
Criticising the past 16 years of the country’s governance, Tarique accused the government of denying the people their democratic rights.
“During this period, many people have been killed and tortured. Particularly during the recent July Movement, a large number of people lost their lives and many were disabled. The democratic environment created through their sacrifices must be protected, and building a safe state is now our primary responsibility.”
Tarique urged people to stay alert regarding the upcoming election, saying, “A certain group has already begun conspiring over the election. We have seen reports in the newspapers about it. Their people are trying to mislead the public in various ways, especially by making unrealistic promises to women.”
Tarique also emphasised that ensuring women’s safety requires making them financially independent. He outlined his plan to introduce a “Family Card” for housewives to help them achieve economic independence.
