The British Council will publish Bangladesh’s first comprehensive mapping of the country’s film industry in December, aiming to offer a policy-focused roadmap for investment, inclusive growth and sustainable development, according to a press release.

Commissioned by the British Council and implemented by Dhaka DocLab, the research is examining the structure, challenges and opportunities of the film ecosystem through nationwide surveys and consultations with producers, independent filmmakers, cinema hall owners and students. The initiative began in February with an open call and has now entered its final stage, with the team reviewing existing policies linked to the sector, the release said.

The British Council said the study is part of its wider regional effort to advance ethical and climate-responsible growth in the creative economy. It said the mapping will present a national ecosystem review, a policy analysis and actionable recommendations for stakeholders across the industry.

‘This seminal research marks an important step in understanding how Bangladesh’s film sector can unlock its full economic potential through a comprehensive review of the policy landscape,’ said British Council Deputy Director Maarya Rehman, adding that growing global interest in South Asian creativity makes collaboration between the creative sectors of Bangladesh and the UK increasingly important.

‘It is a timely initiative, as cinema in Bangladesh is in a transitional phase now,’ said Dhaka DocLab Director Tareq Ahmed, describing the study as an emerging evidence base for smart policy decisions and targeted investment that can help ensure a sustainable future for the industry.

Principal researcher Imran Firdaus said the findings are revealing significant talent and ambition across the country, noting that the report will outline practical steps for filmmakers and policymakers while addressing gender inclusion and sustainability.

The findings will be unveiled at a launching event in December, the release said.
