Brigadier General (Retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam has been appointed as the Chief Security Officer to ensure the overall security of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her son, acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.
Earlier, the BNP acting chairman hade announced that he was set to return to Bangladesh on 25 December, requesting expatriate Bangladeshis not to crowd the airport on the day of his departure from London.
Prior to this, Adviser to the acting chairman Mahdi Amin had revealed that Tarique Rahman will be residing at House No 196 on Gulshan Avenue, with Khaleda Zia currently residing next door at Firoza. However, Khaleda Zia has been at admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital since last month due to increasing complications with her health.
He also revealed that the apartment and offices have been readied for Tarique’s arrival on 25 December.
Reception committee formed to welcome Tarique
In the meantime, BNP has formed a reception committee on the occasion its acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s return. BNP Standing Committee member, Salahuddin Ahmed, has been made the convener of the committee.
The party’s senior Joint Secretary General, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, will serve as the member secretary. Additionally, according to sources, BNP’s 10 divisional organising secretaries, presidents and general secretaries of affiliated organisations, and the conveners and member secretaries of Dhaka Metropolitan North and South committees have been included as members in the reception committee.
The committee is currently holding daily meetings. Under the chairmanship of the party’s secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a joint meeting of BNP and its affiliated organisations was held on Monday at the chairperson’s office in Gulshan.
The meeting discussed in detail how Tarique Rahman would be welcomed back to Bangladesh.
