BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has requested expatriate Bangladeshis not to crowd the airport on the day of his return to the country.
Tarique, who is currently in London, made the request at a discussion organised by the UK’s BNP at the City Pavilion to mark Victory Day.
In a Facebook post early Wednesday, Tarique himself announced that he will return home on 25 December.
While addressing the discussion, he said, “In the difficult days of the party, it was you who gave us courage. Still, I am saying this to everyone who is in London today. I will return to the country on 25 December. But I request everyone — please, no one go to the airport.”
“If people go to the airport, there will be chaos. Everyone will know we are Bangladeshis. This will damage the country’s reputation and the party’s reputation,” he added.
Addressing everyone, he also said, “Those who honour my request today, I will take it that they uphold respect for the party and, above all, for the country. But those who still go there, I will assume they have gone for personal interest.”
Tarique was arrested following the 1/11 political changeover in 2007. After being released on bail in 2008, he left for London. In 2018, after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was imprisoned, Tarique assumed the role of acting chairman of the party.
