The traditional and densely populated village of Senerchar in Mymensingh, is under severe threat due to intense erosion by the Brahmaputra River.
Continued erosion over the past few years has already claimed numerous homes, agricultural lands, mosques, and educational institutions.
The onset of the monsoon season has exacerbated the situation, with the river’s powerful currents causing the erosion to take on a more devastating form.
Local residents have expressed grave concerns that if effective measures are not taken immediately to protect the 500-year-old historic village, it risks being completely wiped off the map. Thousands of villagers are currently living in constant fear as new areas are swallowed by the river every moment.
In a bid to prevent further destruction, affected villagers recently submitted a written application to the Executive Engineer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board in Mymensingh, demanding the construction of a permanent and sustainable embankment.
The application specifies that to save Senerchar from disappearing, it is essential to urgently construct a sustainable embankment using permanent CC blocks or geo-bags. The residents identified the stretch from Senerchar Namapara Mosque to the residence of MD Azim Uddin as the priority area for these emergency erosion-control measures.
Residents of Senerchar have called for immediate intervention and effective action from the relevant administration to prevent thousands of families from losing their ancestral homes and becoming homeless.
