Bangladesh Open University (BOU) has provided financial assistance to its HSC first-year student Md Sabbir Hossain, who lost the vision in his right eye after being struck by a stone thrown by an unidentified person from a moving train.
BOU Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Siddikur Rahman Khan handed over a cheque for medical assistance to Sabbir’s father at the university’s office in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Relevant university officials were present at the time, reads a press release.
Sabbir Hossain, 22, was injured on 21 July while travelling on Dhaka-bound Drutajan Express from Panchagarh after a holiday.
A stone thrown by an unidentified person struck him in the right eye, severely damaging it.
Doctors said there was no possibility of restoring vision in the affected eye. He also sustained a serious head injury.
Following the incident, Sabbir was taken off the train at Jamtoil Railway Station and given primary treatment.
He was later taken to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment. He is currently undergoing treatment.
BOU has stood by the student during his ordeal and provided the financial assistance as part of its support for his medical expenses.
BOU VC Siddikur said, “Bangladesh Open University is committed to standing by its students during any crisis and difficult times. I wish Sabbir a speedy recovery. The university authorities will provide all possible support for his necessary treatment.”
