Former Boalkhali Upazila chairman and Awami League leader Zahedul Hoque has been arrested in connection with a murder case linked to the anti-discrimination student movement.
DC Ashis Bin Hasan of the DMP Prosecution Department confirmed the development on Thursday.
Zahedul Haque was arrested on Tuesday from the capital’s airport area by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB).
He was produced before Dhanmondi Police Station on Wednesday and later remanded to jail by the court.
Zahedul Haque, from West Shakpura in Boalkhali, Chattogram, is a Standard Bank director and a member of the advisory council of Chattogram South District Awami League.
Earlier, on the night of 4 July last year, news of Zahedul Haque attending a wedding at the Chittagong Club prompted local people and members of the anti-discrimination student movement to surround the venue.
He left the event and subsequently went abroad, returning to the country recently.
Police sources said Zahedul Haque faces multiple charges, including killings and attacks during the July uprising. He is also accused of bank fraud, exerting political influence, and land grabbing.
