BNP leader Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, who won the Tangail-5 constituency, described the victory as “the triumph of the people of Tangail Sadar.”
He said, “I am sincerely grateful to all who have endured hardships and worked tirelessly for me. Through the relentless efforts of every leader and activist, we have achieved this victory. I may not be able to repay your labour, but Inshallah, you will always find me by your side whenever needed.”
In a brief speech, he thanked his supporters after District Commissioner and Returning Officer Sharifa Haque announced the election results. Party leaders and activists welcomed Tuku with floral garlands.
Tuku, BNP’s central publicity secretary, said, “I will fulfill every promise I made to the people of Tangail.”
“The people of the country have united to safeguard independence and sovereignty,” he said, adding that those who opposed the country in 1971, who did not want independence, tried to use that force to obstruct democracy. “Under Tarique Rahman’s leadership, the people have resisted that conspiracy,” he said.
In the 13th parliamentary election, Tuku was elected with 131,279 votes in Tangail-5 (Sadar). His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ahsan Habib Masud, received 80,283 votes, while BNP’s rebel independent candidate Farhad Iqbal secured 69,408 votes.
