BNP has announced a massive rally in front of its central office at Naya Paltan in the capital to mark International Workers’ Day, set to be observed on 1 May in Bangladesh and across the globe.
Tarique Rahman, the BNP chairman and prime minister, will attend the event as chief guest.
The announcement was made by BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan during a press conference held on Thursday night, following a meeting of the preparatory committee for the International Workers’ Day celebrations at the party’s central office.
Anwar Hossain, the president of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, will chair the rally, which is being organised by the labour wing. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is scheduled to attend as the special guest, alongside various senior leaders from the BNP and Sramik Dal.
Addressing the press conference, Nazrul Islam Khan stated that several demands of the working class – including wages, workplace health and safety, and livelihood security – remain unaddressed.
He affirmed that the Sramik Dal will persist with its movement to secure these rights. Khan further noted that while the BNP is in power, additional initiatives are still required to ensure the fair rights of workers.
He expressed hope for the full implementation of the promises made to the working class in the party’s election manifesto. Khan highlighted that some positive steps have already been taken, specifically citing debt waivers for agricultural labourers and small farmers.
While acknowledging that recent initiatives to amend labour laws have been helpful, he emphasised that further reforms are still necessary.
The press conference was attended by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Sramik Dal Chief Coordinator Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, and Sramik Dal President Anwar Hossain, among other party activists.
