BNP has suspended two scheduled programmes due to urgent circumstances and has convened an emergency standing committee meeting for Friday night.
Party sources said the programme slated for 3pm at the Irrigation Building on Manik Mia Avenue, where BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was due to participate, has been postponed.
Another programme, scheduled for 4pm in front of the WASA building at Karwan Bazar and to be led by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, has also been suspended for the time being.
The decision was taken considering what party leaders described as “important and urgent circumstances,” BNP sources said on Friday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the BNP has convened an emergency meeting of its standing committee at 8:30pm on Friday at the party chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to preside over the meeting virtually.
Sources said the meeting is expected to review the prevailing political situation, discuss organisational issues, and determine future party programmes, with the possibility of key decisions being taken.
Confirming the developments, BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan said the two previously announced programmes had been suspended and that an emergency standing committee meeting had been called for Friday night.
