The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has suspended the nomination of Kamal Zaman Molla for the Madaripur-1 constituency, which comprises Shibchar upazila.
The move was announced through a press release sent to the media on Tuesday. No specific reason was mentioned in the statement, which only said the nomination was suspended due to unavoidable circumstances.
Molla, a businessman and former vice president of the Madaripur district BNP, has long been active in local political events and party programmes in the constituency.
On Monday evening, the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the party’s nomination list for 237 constituencies at a press conference held at the BNP chairperson’s political office in Gulshan.
Following the announcement of Molla’s nomination, supporters of Madaripur district BNP Joint Convener Sajjad Hossain Siddiqui Lavlu blocked the Dhaka–Bhanga Expressway on Monday night in protest.
They burned tyres and staged demonstrations in the Pachchar area of Shibchar upazila, disrupting road communication between Dhaka and 21 southern districts.
