BNP Chairperson’s adviser Zainul Abedin Farroque on Saturday said the party has been working relentlessly to restore democracy, safeguard independence and ensure the fundamental rights of the people.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion meeting held at the National Press Club.
Farroque stated that the core philosophy of the BNP’s politics is to ensure an environment of peace, development, and freedom of movement for the general public. The event was organised by the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Motorchalak Dal.
Highlighting the historic role of the late President Ziaur Rahman, the BNP leader remarked that during a moment of extreme national crisis in 1971, Ziaur Rahman proclaimed independence and united the nation.
He added that it was upon Zia’s call that people from all walks of life joined the Liberation War, and that Zia’s ideals continue to inspire his own lifelong commitment to politics.
Farroque further noted that following the death of Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia took the helm of the party despite facing numerous adversities and conspiracies. He mentioned that she served as the prime minister on three occasions and worked extensively to consolidate democracy in the country.
Criticising the current political landscape, the BNP leader alleged that democracy is being repeatedly obstructed, while opposition leaders and activists are being subjected to imprisonment, oppression, and torture.
Regarding the missing BNP leader Ilias Ali, Farroque expressed deep concern, stating there are widespread allegations that he was “disappeared” due to his robust role in the movement for democracy and the restoration of rights
