Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee, has raised concerns over the neutrality of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections.
His conveyed his concerns after laying a floral wreath at the grave of ex-president Ziaur Rahman on Friday.
In response to questions from journalists about the DUCSU and JUCSU elections, Hossain said, “You can see the ongoing concerns regarding the elections in universities. In the JUCSU elections held on Thursday, why are only the Chhatra Dal’s actions being discussed?
“Several panels, independent candidates, and even some teachers have withdrawn from the elections. There must be some reason behind this.”
He further said, “The people of Bangladesh have the right to cast their votes. In 2009, they voted, in 2014, a voter-less election took place, in 2018, voting happened at night instead of the day, and in 2024, a sham election took place.
“Therefore, the people of Bangladesh want to trust the electoral process. Those responsible for organising such elections should ensure no situation arises that causes doubts among the people, with parties withdrawing from the process.”
Hossain expressed his condolences over the deaths of journalist Tarikul Islam during the DUCSU election and teacher Jannatul Ferdous during the JUCSU election.
‘Division could bring back autocracy’
Hossain further emphasised, “Let me be clear – division will not make the people stronger. We must remember that only unity can defeat autocracy. The return of autocracy cannot be allowed through such farcical measures.
“There is still time – unite. Those who have fought for democracy should never fall into the trap of divisive politics. Come together for the cause of democracy. Understand the language of the people and give them responsibility.”
Advising those involved in the election process, Hossain said, “Do not lean left or right – find a middle ground, align with the voters, and adapt to the environment. You will prove your neutrality, and your position will be recognised in the future.”
‘Conspiracies afoot to undermine democracy’
Hossain went on to say, “There are ongoing conspiracies to undermine Bangladesh’s democracy, both inside and outside the country. Anti-state forces and exiled autocrats are conspiring to derail Bangladesh’s democratic path.
“They aim to stop Bangladesh from maintaining its status as a moderate democratic nation on the global stage.”
He concluded, “We must unite the people and stand against these conspiracies. The power of the people and their unyielding desire for democracy will ultimately triumph. The people will decide the future of Bangladesh’s constitution and reforms.
“These reforms, based on the aspirations of the people, will shape the future of the nation, under the leadership of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.”
