Syed Alam, president of Kachhapia Union BNP, was detained Thursday morning by an army-led joint force in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar.
He is accused of trying to steal votes and pressuring officials at a local polling centre.
He was later handed over to Ramu police.
The arrest took place around 10am at the Garjania Faizul Ulum Fazil Madrasah polling centre.
Ramu Police Officer-in-Charge, Monir Hossain, confirmed the incident. He said Syed Alam was detained on suspicion but was later released.
Local sources claimed that the BNP leader had tried to manipulate voters in favour of the BNP candidate by pressuring polling officials.
The intervention by the joint force reportedly prevented any irregularities.
Voting for the 13th National Parliament elections began at 7:30am on Thursday across the constituency.
