The nominations of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami candidates in Chattogram-3 (Sandwip) constituency have been declared valid, while the nominations of two other contenders were cancelled.
The scrutiny of nomination papers for the 13th Parliamentary Election and referendum was held at noon on Friday.
Chattogram Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah was present during the verification process.
The two candidates whose nominations were cancelled are Jatiya Party (JP) nominee MA Salam and independent candidate Md Moahedul Mawla.
Jatiya Party candidate MA Salam submitted his nomination through ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader.
However, the Election Commission stated that the party nominee’s papers must bear the signature of GM Quader. As the nomination paper was signed by Ruhul Amin instead, the nomination was cancelled.
Independent candidate Md Moahedul Mawla was found to be a loan defaulter. In addition, during random verification of the required one per cent voter signatures, all 10 voters selected through lottery denied signing in his support, leading to the cancellation of his nomination.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Mohammad Amzad Hossain declared himself as a dual citizen but failed to submit his American Green Card. He was given time until 4pm to submit the necessary documents, including his latest travel information. Otherwise, his nomination may also be cancelled.
The candidates whose nominations were declared valid are BNP’s Mostafa Kamal Pasha and Jamaat-e-Islami’s Muhammad Alauddin.
Returning Officer Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah said the authorities would show zero tolerance towards any violation of the electoral code of conduct.
“We want to demonstrate to the international community that we can hold a peaceful election. All candidates are requested to strictly follow the code of conduct until the end of the polls,” he said.
It may be mentioned that 10 aspirants collected nomination papers in the Chattogram-3 constituency, but only five candidates eventually submitted their nominations.
