Three leaders of BNP’s Chattogram district (north) unit have been expelled from all party positions, including their primary membership, on charges of violating party discipline.
A press release signed by the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was issued on Friday.
The three leaders are Komol Kador, convener of Sitakunda Upazila BNP under Chattogram North District; Md Morsalin, former president of the Chattogram North District Volunteer Wing; and Korban Ali Sahed, member secretary of the Sitakunda Upazila Chhatra Dal.
Various programmes were organised under the leadership of Komol Kador demanding that Aslam Chowdhury be nominated instead of the BNP-declared candidate Kazi Salahuddin for the Chattogram-4 (Sitakunda) constituency. Supporters of Aslam Chowdhury also threatened to continue protests if the candidate was not changed in Sitakunda.
Earlier on 3 November, BNP announced the names of potential candidates for 237 constituencies. Among the 16 constituencies in Chattogram, candidates were announced for 10, with the remaining six to be declared later. Kazi Salahuddin was announced as the BNP candidate for Sitakunda. Following this, Aslam Chowdhury’s supporters blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram highway and railway line on Monday night in protest.
Several leaders of the BNP’s district (north) unit believe that the suspension of the three leaders was a consequence of that incident.
