The Supreme Court administration has issued new directives updating the dress code for judges and lawyers in all subordinate civil and criminal courts and tribunals across Bangladesh, making black coats non-mandatory until further notice.
The instruction, which came into effect in July, was issued by the judicial branch of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court. It was signed by Registrar General Muhammad Habibur Rahman Siddique under the order of the Chief Justice.
Under the revised guidelines, judges of all subordinate civil and criminal courts and tribunals will wear black coats along with white full-sleeve shirts or white sarees/salwar kameez, paired with white neck bands or black ties.
For lawyers, existing dress code provisions remain in place, requiring white full-sleeved shirts or white sarees/salwar-kameez with either a white neckband or a black tie. However, wearing black coats or gowns is no longer mandatory.
Officials said the revised instructions aim to modernise courtroom attire while maintaining the dignity and formality of judicial proceedings.
