Mushfiqur Rahim celebrated his 39th birthday by breaking Tamim Iqbal’s Bangladesh record for most 50-plus scores in Test cricket during the first Test against Pakistan national cricket team at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Mushfiq started the second day unbeaten on 48 after Bangladesh closed strongly on day one in Mirpur. He reached his 29th Test half-century with a single off Shaheen Shah Afridi in the fourth over of the morning session.
The innings also took Mushfiq past Tamim for the highest number of 50-plus scores by a Bangladesh batter in Tests. Both players started the match level on 42 such innings. Mushfiq now stands alone at the top, while Mominul Haque sits close behind with 39.
Bangladesh built on their strong first-day platform despite losing wickets in the morning. Litton Das attacked early and struck three consecutive boundaries in one over from Afridi. He failed to convert the start and fell for 33 from 67 balls after offering a catch off Mohammad Abbas.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz also departed cheaply after scoring 10 with a four and a six. Abbas removed him as well after Imam-ul-Haq completed the catch.
At the time of reporting, Mushfiq remained unbeaten on 68 from 163 balls with eight fours. Taijul Islam stayed alongside him on three as Bangladesh moved to 363 for six.
Earlier in the match, Najmul Hossain Shanto made 101, while Mominul fell short of a century after scoring 91.
