What began as a simple father’s gesture to fulfil his son’s craving for biriyani ended in a tragedy that shook a Mirpur family.
Shamim (40), an autorickshaw driver and father of three, left his home in Mirpur-10 on what should have been a routine errand. But he never returned in the same way.
He died on Sunday night at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, nearly a month after being brutally stabbed in the capital’s Pallabi area.
The incident took place on 11 April in Mirpur-10, turning an ordinary day into a prolonged fight for life that Shamim ultimately lost.
Shamim’s wife, Sumi Akter, said their family lives in the Benarashi Palli area on Lane 18 near the water tank. The couple has one son and two daughters. Shamim worked as an autorickshaw driver.
She said Shamim returned home at noon after driving his rickshaw for lunch. When their son asked for biriyani, he went out again to buy it.
Near a mosque in Benarashi Palli, Shamim got into an argument with Bahubali and several others. At one point, they attacked him with sharp weapons and stabbed him repeatedly. The attackers left him injured on the road.
Locals later informed the family by phone, and Shamim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the same day. He was later treated at several hospitals as his condition fluctuated.
When his condition worsened again, he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday last week, where he died on Sunday night.
Police said they arrested two named accused, Bahubali and Rohit, in connection with the case.
Sub-Inspector Md Sohan Mollah of Pallabi Police Station said “The incident occurred over a previous enmity during a clash. Shamim’s wife filed a case at that time.”
He said the accused were already named in the case and have been arrested, while the investigation is ongoing.
