Rishad Hossain smiled when asked to sum up his Big Bash and Australia experience. “There’s so much to say… two months can’t be explained in a day,” the leg-spinner said, hinting that the full story would take time to unfold. But with curiosity running high, he eventually opened up about a journey that has already reshaped his outlook on the game.
The comments came after the opening match of the Indomitable Bangladesh T20 Cup, where Rishad claimed three wickets. Yet his performance barely featured in the discussion. Almost every question at the press conference focused on the Big Bash — his first media appearance since returning from Australia.
That interest was inevitable. Playing a full season for Hobart Hurricanes, Rishad took 15 wickets and earned widespread praise for his control and temperament. His displays drew attention within Australian cricket circles and marked a significant step forward in his career. He had been signed by the Hurricanes the previous season as well, but BPL commitments prevented him from travelling. This time, he skipped the BPL to seize the opportunity.
Rishad believes Australian cricket operates on a level of its own. He pointed to the conditions, environment and overall professionalism as key differences. “Everything about the playing atmosphere is on another level,” he said, adding that the experience had broadened his understanding of elite cricket.
Several former and current stars, including Brett Lee, Ricky Ponting and Steven Smith, spoke with him during the tournament. Rishad said their humility left a lasting impression and offered valuable lessons both on and off the field.
Beyond personal success, Rishad feels he helped raise interest in Bangladeshi cricketers abroad. Since returning home, he has continued his form and now stands as a key member of Bangladesh’s T20 setup.
